Early last year, we all learned the Soho staple and Japanese favorite Honmura An would close forever when owner Koichi Kobari announced he was moving back to Japan. Regulars streamed into the Mercer Street restaurant in its final weeks to get a last fix of noodles and bemoaned another great restaurant lost. Kobari emails today to let us in on some happy news, though it's not exactly the reopening announcement noodle fanatics were hoping for:
"We we able to finish our sixteen year of Honmura An with a bang; it was like a New Years Eve every night for three weeks. And I was most overwhelmed and thankful for the wonderful compassionate friendship and patronage of our New York customers.
Now as my handsign left on the door of the old Honmura An space on Mercer promised, I am back in business.
This time in downtown Tokyo. A new Honmura An in Roppongi has opened last winter. We have had the pleasure of welcoming many customers and friends from New York and abroad and I am most thrilled and thankful. It's no Soho, but we imagine those who aren't satisfied with Matsugen might be willing to make the pilgrimage.
Just wanted to let you know. We all looking forward to welcoming to my new smaller yet nice space featuring Authentic soba and tori dango and all other delicacies."
