Sneak Previews: MePa's New Country Club

New, 20 comments

Welcome to Country Club the latest MePa club/lounge trying to riff on that speakeasy motif, opening tonight at 248 West 14th St. They've got all the obligatory clubby accents— luxe couches, mahogany paneling, fancy chandeliers— along with an extensive bellini menu and some trendy bar snacks (Truffled Grilled Cheese, “Pigs in a Blanket” Lollipops). But on the flip side, the club also features a massive stage for live music and DJs, flat screen TVs, waitresses with cleavage to spare, and, at the preview party anyway, a major B&T contingent for their clientele. You have to fill the 3,000 square somehow. A correspondent at last night's party puts it best as "confused":

"It exuded a burlesque vibe but also had a huge flatscreen TV. Is this a sports bar or a speakeasy or... a country club? The best waitress wore a black corset, a mini skirt, and platform boots...one sat next to me and put her arm around me while I placed my order."
As the press materials say, it's a place for a "unique" nightlife experience. And according to Cutty Country Club is backed by Sopranos actor Will DeMeo baseball's own Bronson Arroyo, so there's some built in buzz and client base right there. The question is, will (famed cover musician) Arroyo take up that stage?
