WEST VILLAGE— UrbanDaddy brings word of a new underground spot on the lower floor of West Village restaurant Kingswood: "The official company line is that it's only open for private events, but unofficially the basement has quietly been throwing one hell of a party for those who venture downstairs...enter the unmarked door to the right of the restaurant...Descend the narrow stairway and find your way into the dark, inviting bar and adjacent black-boothed lounge...On any given night, the room is filled with beautiful people of all ilk." [UrbanDaddy]

SOHO— A correspondent chimes in with some bad news from Soho institution Vesuvio Bakery: "So this is alarming: Vesuvio Bakery on Prince Street, perhaps the only place in Soho that sells freshly baked bagels, has been closed for weeks for 'renovations.' This place has been open since 1920 - I really hope they'll reopen. No sign of work being done inside that I could see." [EaterWire]

EAST VILLAGE— On the 29th Knife + Fork will be offering a $60 five course tasting menu with special pairings: "Shmaltz Brewing Company, handcrafters for well over a decade of HE'BREW - The Chosen Beer, and Knife + Fork present a unique beer dinner on Tuesday, July 29, 2008 featuring a 5-course tasting menu, pairing Knife + Fork Chef/Owner Damien Brassel's inventive, modern European fare with Shmaltz's new line of sideshow-inspired Coney Island Craft Lagers..." TOKYO— Grand Central Oyster Bar is opening another location in Tokyo: "The restaurant opened on June 30. The new Japanese location is located on the first basement level of 'Meiji Seimei Kan,' which like Grand Central Station is a prestigious landmark. It has maintained its magnificent presence in Tokyo since 1934... Marunouchi Grand Central Oyster Bar has 232 seats for dining. Visitors will be able to enjoy the same ambiance as when dining in the original New York location in Grand Central Terminal." [EaterWire]
