Adventures in Shilling #033: THOR, Last Licks, Thunder Jackson's, Brooklyn Ice House

New, 9 comments

It's time for another edition of Adventures in Shilling, in which we fight shilling the best way we can, by shaming tasteless, unscrupulous shills into submission. Well, that's the plan, at least. Fight shills yourself by dropping offensive links to tips@eater.com

2008_06_tjshill.jpgThis week all of the big shills come from our own comments section and tipline. Because if you want to fight shills, you have to start on your home turf. We've got a special 100% shill probability today so read through for all the despicable and sad attempts:

What makes this shill more suspicious than it already seems to be is that we've heard a number of negative reports on The Brooklyn Ice House. But to each his own: "Awesome neighborhood bar. The food is super tasty; brisquet, pulled pork sandwiches and now burgers. it offers a small, but good beer selection and reasonable prices for both the food and drink. The owner Trevor is a very nice guy and the other bartenders seem to be cool people as well. Its just what the doctor ordered."

The following comment comes across as a shill mostly because it was posted almost three months after this original post went live. Oh, and also all the exclamation points. The Thunder Jackon's people just won't let up: "I don’t usually comment on sites like this BUT?.are you all crazy?? The food is amazing! Do you realize that the chef is someone from a very upscale eastside restaurant? This is not your ordinary bar food. It is definitely not a Costco burger. Have the steak – it’s just as good as any fine steak house!!!! OK?. the "40's bag” thing is a bit corny- but the food is awesome!!"

We've got a pretty sure thing shill in the comments for the new 'Sports Bar for Kids' Last Licks :"i went there and i thought it was great and a real original idea and it was very kid friendly. the kids loved looking at all of the memorbilia that covered the walls, it was like going to a mini cooperstown. also there were tvs for them to watch and video games to play. the ice cream was awesome too! i would recommend it and i think kids would love it!"
Shill Probability: 76%

This is the second time we've received an email shill to the tipline about The Hotel on Rivington's THOR from this enamored diner: "Went again last night. Not only is it one of the coolest New York-esqu restaurants in Lower Manhattan with the live DJ, comfy couches and round tables to suit big parties, but the menu is again more developed and more amazing. I can't believe how just plain cool this restaurant is. (And they have an updated website too.) Gnocchi with fig and foie gras, octopus and fennel panzanella, chili rubbed duck with tangerines (an elegant, fantastic play on chinese orange duck), and just great comfortable food. Oh, and Thor, where did you get your black crystal chandeliers??
Shill Probability: 100%
