Disaster Report: West Village Water Main Break

New, 1 comment

WEST VILLAGE—If you spent the last three days basking in the sun on the beach, you may not know about the less than pristine conditions back here on the island. On Saturday night at around 11 p.m., thousands of gallons of water flooded Christopher, West 10th, and West 4th Streets when a water main broke. According to reader reports, water at the Spotted Pig, blocks away, was coming out of the faucets brown, while restaurants right in the nexus of the flood had to be evacuated. Patrons leaving the establishments, which include Westville, I Tre Merli, Cafe Condesa, Fat Cat, and the jazz club Smalls among others, were given trash bags to wear to keep them dry while they waded through the water (video here). By 5:30 a.m. on Sunday residents were let back into their homes, but there's no telling how much permanent damage was done to the residential buildings and the restaurants (and their basements) during the deluge. Aside from the damage restaurateurs lost business by being closed for the weekend dinner and brunch services. Pictures of the aftermath here.
