2008 James Beard Awards, Final Nominees Announced

New, 3 comments

The James Beard Foundation, the grand arbiters of taste, announced the final nominees for the 2008 awards this morning. Now there are 52 categories, and if you're really interested in all of them, check the official awards site. Otherwise be happy to note that New Yorkers and their restaurants make most of the big categories: Best Restaurateur (Joe Bastianich/Mario Batali and Jean-Georges Vongerichten), Outstanding Chef (Dan Barber), Outstanding Restaurant (Gramercy Tavern and Jean Georges), Best New Restaurant (Anthos), Rising Star Chef (Gavin Kaysen, Cafe Boulud), and the list goes on and on. With any luck, we'll sweep. As for best chef in New York City, there's some strong competition:

Michael Anthony: Gramercy Tavern

Terrance Brennan: Picholine

David Chang: Momofuku Ssäm Bar

Wylie Dufresne: WD-50

Gabriel Kreuther: The Modern

The awards, one of the biggest foodie events of the year, will take place on June 8 at Lincoln Center. Start the hunt for an evening gown now. The full list of all the major nominees:
