i was in the neighborhood at around 7:00 a couple weeks ago and thought, "oh, i've been wanting to try this place!" i walk in, see anne and her blond shaggy cut in the kitchen and ask what the wait is. i'm told, "there is no wait but we can't seat you until the rest of your party is here." that's fair enough and pretty standard practice in new york so i call my friend emily who says she's about 5 minutes away.
5 minutes later emily shows up, i go to the host stand and say, "okay, we're both here." the response? "it's a 2.5 hour wait."
"there was one table available and someone else got to it first. sorry."
"but i asked you how long the wait was."
"and at that time there wasn't any."
"okay, but you could have told me that if anyone else walked in the door after me that we wouldn't get seated for hours."
"you can still eat at the bar. there are people at the bar who will be seated at tables soon."
"okay, can you tell us when you'll do that so we know where/when the bar seats will open up?"
"no, i can't. you'll just have to watch."
and at that we left. i'm an avid eater outer and i still thought that was pretty ridiculous and her attitude was terrible. who would, with a straight face, tell you there was no wait if the place was totally booked from 7:15 to 10?
