While 10 Downing attracted a good deal of press for its epic delays, it's not the only restaurant to make the fall previews two years in a row. Meet Co. Pizzeria, the long anticipated project from Sullivan Street Bakery's Jim Lahey, first announced in Summer '07. The pizzeria's original projection of December '07 came and went and we haven't heard much from the burgeoning pizzaolo all year. Until now that is. Longtime Sullivan Street Bakery disciple Ed Levine got a sneak preview of the setup last week and brought along Slice to document it. What they found:

The space has a bar, two long communal tables, and a number of two tops, equalling 54 seats; Lahey's pies include the Popeye, The Hunter, Margherita, Ham and Cheese, and the Dom (dedicated to Di Fara's legendary Dom DeMarco); and more importantly, Adam Kuban's verdict:

"The pies on Wednesday night were amazing. Lahey is a bread genius, and as the crust is the hardest part of pizza to perfect, we're already in good hands...Friday's pies were made using a younger dough, so the flavor wasn't as assertive, but they were just short of pizza nirvana and would still blow away many of the best pies you've had."
It's only too bad Lahey didn't get his act together by last March, or we could have had a Ko/Co opening face-off.
