Three weeks ago Andrew Silverman's ill-fated follow up to Steak Frites in Union Square, Cafe Society, shuttered after seven months in business. Upon closing, reps at the restaurant told us they were doing a brief renovation to the space, updating the menu, and planned to reopen in November. We suspected it would be a more thorough overhaul than they were letting on, and a tipster has some new, riveting intel to confirm:
"The former Cafe Society and Steak Frites is being reopened as Union Prime with Jon B as a partner from Home, Guesthouse, and Greenhouse...
They are going to try and bring the nightlife crowd from 27th St to Union Square for steak. Andrew Silverman has been scrambling all over town to get this deal done since he lost a ton of money from Cafe Society and the new Steak Frites. Both huge failures, cost him millions. Sure the community board will be excited for a nightclub right next to Union Square Cafe."Let's reprint that quote one more time for the folks in the back: "They are going to try and bring the nightlife crowd from 27th St to Union Square for steak." Best of luck to Mssrs Silverman and B on the plan—and that little matter of a liquor license transfer.
