EaterWire: Freedom Tower Calling All Restaurateurs & More!

New, 6 comments

FINANCIAL DISTRICT—If the Port Authority has anything to say about it, there will be a restaurant atop the Freedom Tower, opening sometime in 2013. More at the Observer: "The Port Authority is putting out its feelers for a company to develop and manage a two-floor restaurant on the 100th and 101st floors of the 102-story Freedom Tower...Windows on the World, the restaurant on the 106th and 107th floors of the old World Trade Center, was one of the world’s highest-grossing restaurants, according to a 2001 article in The New York Times, taking in some $24 million a year in the late 1980's. The Port Authority hopes to select a developer some time this fall, with the grand opening slated for early 2013. [Observer]

WEST VILLAGE—Minetta Lane Ital Bellavitae has a new chef, Raffaele Ronca. He comes to the restaurant by way of Naples and seems to have a way with hen: "The roasted bird emerges juicy, aromatic and extremely knife-friendly. "I'm constantly on the phone with my mother in Italy," he says, crediting her with helping him tweak recipes like a soulful paccheri pasta with beef ragu, and fresh puntarelle with green olive oil and a touch of anchovy." MIDTOWN EAST—While the signs on the windows at Blair Perrone Steakhouse now read 'closed for renovation,' it doesn't look good for the 2nd Avenue restaurant, which first shuttered a week ago. Multiple sources indicate the venue is done for good, fallen victim to its $62K/month rent—a fate the last tenant of the space, Ruth's Chris, also met with. We're unable to confirm at present because the restaurant has taken the phone off the hook. [EaterWire]
