The Plywood Report investigates restaurants and bars that are in that phase somewhere between concept and soft open. Your sightings to tips@eater.com, svp.
1) Lower East Side: In reference to the above photo, a quick quiz for Plywood connoisseurs: recognize that space? The red walls are a telling hint. Yep, that's 71 Clinton Street, former home to 71 Clinton Fresh Food. And it certainly appear that, after laying dormant for quite some time, there's activity anew in the space. Anyone know who signed a lease here? [PRE-PLYWOOD]
2) Midtown West: At right, a small glimpse of South Gate, the new Central Park South restaurant from chef Kerry Heffernan (ex-Eleven Madison Park, Mondrian) that's set to open next month. Color commentary, courtesy of The RG, who also supplied the photo: "The mirror-decked front bar with exposed glass bar shelves overlooks the park. Formerly Cafe Botanica, South Gate will be a swanky showcase for Heffernan's American fusion cuisine." [PLYWOOD/POST-PLYWOOD]
3) Williamsburg: We're overdue for the mainstream media to hop on the "Williamsburg is THE new restaurant neighborhood!" story, but while we wait, here's another newcomer from the lens of roving Eater photog Will Femia: Favela, a new Brazilian place coming to the corner of South 5th and Wythe.
