Eater Inside: BarFry

Kalina, 9/15/07.

So, here's the KalinaPorn of BarFry, Josh DeChellis and Rick Camac's new tempura joint in the West Village. We remain skeptical about just how close to a restaurant this place gets, but DeChellis is both a skilled chef and nice guy, so we're inclined to give it a shot. Here's some shiny PR positioning to get you in the mood:

BarFry will feature DeChellis's light, fresh and unique take on this traditional Japanese dish in a casual setting. Among the a la carte items BarFry offers are made-to-order tempura Po Boys, "bar boxes" which include a selection of seafood and vegetable tempuras and hand-selected meats prepared tonkatsu style ( Japanese cutlet), as well as signature sauces such as Pickled Jalapeno Soy, Red Yuzu Hot sauce and Wasabi Remoulade. There is also a variety of side dishes like Sauteed Pea Leaves with Lemon Zest and XO Sauce, Olive Oil and Wasabi Pickles, and a chalkboard featuring daily tempura specials with ingredients that are sourced from local purveyors...BarFry is inspired by the ritual of the classic tempura bars of Japan; yet in a more casual and lively environment.
