One Essex Street, located in the heart of the Flight of the Conchords grazing lands where Canal, Essex and East Broadway all sort of meet, has been the subject of frenzied plywood speculation round these parts before. Initially, whispers had it that none other than Keith McNally had his eye on the space (he denied it). Then came word the Martignetti Brothers were in the mix (no firm proof of that, either).
Now, finally, some tangible evidence that something's definitely happening at 1 Essex. Per the agenda for this coming Monday's Community Board 3 meeting, an applicant named Vong LLC is applying for a wine-and-beer license for the space. Wait, Vong?! As in Jean Georges Vongerichten's popular midtown Vietnamese restaurant? Not so, say JGV's minions, who email Eater, "We wish. No, we know nothing about a Vong opening downtown." A bit of McNally smokescreen, then? We wouldn't put it past the gentleman. Developing, per usual.
