EaterWire Scent Of Death Edition: Something's Fishy At Dani

SOHO—A source sends the following note about West Soho Italian restaurant Dani: "Something may be up with the Sicilian/Italian restaurant Dani. It's on the corner of Hudson and Charlton, not far from the infamous Charolais. It's closed for business, though with no paper on the windows. A sign in the window from chef/owner Don Pintabona says that the staff is exicted* about the summer break, and that dining room and kitchen upgrades will be made while the place is closed. He apologized for any inconvenience to the customers, but said he looked forward to seeing them again when the restaurant reopens after Labor Day. There is a telephone number given for catering and special events. It strikes me as odd that there's no definite date for reopening. 'After Labor Day' is vague, and usually when restaurants or other businesses close for vacation they say exactly when they'll reopen. It's also strange that Dani needs dining room and kitchen upgrades, at least of the sort that can't be accommodated when it's open for business, as it's only been around for maybe a year and a half. It could be that I'm reading too much into the situation, but it's worth watching. * = 'Excited?' Consider that they're unlikely to be getting paid, that's hardly the appropriate word." The Deathwatch Committee taskforce has been alerted. If the place isn't back open by the second week of September, we're storming the place. [EaterWire Inbox]

WEST VILLAGE—Some bad news for friends of Dorothy, from a tipster: "West Vill institution- and Judy hangout- Julius's has been seized by NYS for failure to pay taxes. There is a sign on the door. Being DTF'd is worse than being DOH'd anyday." [EaterWire Inbox]

TRIBECA—A tipster writes: "I was eating at Landmarc in Tribeca tonight and Dave Martin from Top Chef Season 1 was my waiter! He didn't twitch TOO much but he was all over the place. Very reminiscent from his character on the show - scatter brain and friendly." Why look at that—there is life after reality television. [EaterWire Inbox]

FLATIRON—If anyone had lingering doubts about Devi's demise, the note on the restaurant's website should put them to rest. "As the executive chefs of Dévi, both Suvir Saran and Hemant Mathur are extremely disappointed to learn that operational differences between the restaurant’s owner and the staff have led to the closing of Dévi...Please visit Suvir's website and subscribe to his newsletter, if you wish to keep informed about Suvir and Hemant's continued work together and new openings." [EaterWire]

EAST VILLAGE—Via our friends over at Curbed, we hear the rumor that precious restaurant Danal on East 10th Street may need to move elsewhere "because a developer will be buying up the low-rise walk-ups on the block to tear them down and build big." Isn't that just the way of things? [Curbed]
