Rumor du Jour: Ago Coming to De Niro's Downtown

We interrupt our coverage of all things Chodoblog (for only a moment) to pass along an interesting rumor that comes our way from upstart (and geniusly named) blog Down By The Hipster. Roll footage: "Robert De Niro's yet to open Downtown Hotel in Tribeca (inset, as seen in October) has finalized plans for its lobby restaurant... Ago, the LA and Miami Italian Hotspot, will be occupying the lobby space, and expect celebs and gawkers to make this one the big openings of 2007."

There certainly will be heat surrounding this joint, if this rumor plays out—and if the long-delayed Downtown ever manages to get its doors open. No word yet on the deal on Ago's website. (Nevertheless, we suggest you click through immediately, with your computer's volume cranked.)

More color: DBTH notes that the pairing fits "since Bobby D and those other Tribeca heavyweights (literally) the Weinstein Brothers were chef Agostino Sciandri original partners when he jumped ship from legendary Brentwood trattoria Toscana to open the first Ago in West Hollywood a few years back." Oh, and this: word is the ceiling is comprised of nine million wine corks. Alrighty then.
