BruniBetting: Wakiya

Tomorrow, Frank Bruni reviews Wakiya, Ian Schrager's temple of Chinese decadence at the Gramercy Park Hotel, with the acclaimed Yuji Wakiya at the helm (the poor bastard). Today, the Eater oddsmakers have set the action as follows:

Zero Stars: 4-1 ??
One Star: 3-1
Two Stars: 10-1
Three Stars: 750-1
Four Stars: 25,000-1
While the oddsmakers must acknowledge that statistically the one star outcome is more likely, we are on the goose egg watch at Eater today. Wakiya may turn out to be everything the Bruni hates in a restaurant, starting with the fact that it is horrendously overdone and unjustifiably expensive (the latter of which he alludes to on the blog). Also coming into play is that the level of anticipation built up for this restaurant sets it up nicely for a Bruni special occasion review. By this we mean that the man doesn't award zero stars all that often. He waits for certain special circumstances, such as when a big flashy expensive restaurant is flat-out awful. It's going to be a good one, folks. Bet as you wish, get suckered into that two star action if you must, but we're putting a hundie on the zero stars.
