Eater Inside: Papatzul

[Kalina, 9/11/06.]

In her note to us, Papatzul owner Deb Amezcua described her new SoHo restaurant in strikingly simple terms: "Authentic regional Mexican food is served in a relaxed environment and the bar serves great Margaritas and Sangria." And, especially considering its primo address (55 Grand; in the former La Jumelle), this sort of talk is plain refreshing. If SoHo can finally claim a good margarita joint (at it's best SoHo Cantina only got part of the way there), it's all very refreshing. The chef here is Deb's husband, Theirry Amezcua, who has Biba (in Boston), Il Buco and Savoy on his CV. Expect a combination of for-the-table caliber offerings, combined with a few items more refined, such as a baby rack of lamb and a sirloin steak.
