It's time for another edition of The Shutter, in which Eater readers report on restaurant closings around the city. To set the mood, gaze at the above photo above of Tribeca's Liquor Store Bar, shuttered eons ago but now officially on the block as part of the drying of New York. Photo by Will Femia.
1) Upper East Side: "Mainland closed. 64th and 3rd. Splashy opening last year. Chinese." [Menupages]
2) Upper West Side: "Le Caridad on Broadway and 77th closed." From darkness, light: a phone call reveals that it is just closed for renovations. Expected reopening early next month. [Menupages]
3) Upper West Side: MUG reports, "After its lease expires, it will be last call for the much-loved Upper West Side watering hole, the P & G Cafe." [MUG, w/bonus bartender's lament: "They tell me it’s going to be a bank."]
4) Chelsea: a totally unconfirmed rumor that seems to surface every year at this time: "Is it true that the Frying Pan is closing and the ship is sailing upstream?" Color us dubious—no way that thing can sail—but anyone know more?
