Petition Du Jour: Save The Place

Another landlord v. proprietor battle is underway, this one at 310 West 4th Street, where Edith Rappy/Taube Management is up against Alexander Achilleos, owner of the West Village date haven, The Place. Seems that the landlord has refused to renew The Place's lease, which is due to expire May 31st (a verbal extension has been granted through July).

Achilleos has set up a website to collect signatures in support of his cause. At top of said website is the message:

Greedy landlords destroy too many small businesses. The Place, a symbol of all the West Village stands for, is about to be no more. The restaurant employs 25 people who may lose their needed jobs. Additionally, the 200+ charities it has supported since its opening will also suffer.
Though Eater has always found Achilleos to be an upstanding restaurateur – his 10% of proceeds to charity is a nice touch – reputation and good will may not do the trick here. So, for those who have already booked the venue for Valentines Day 2007, in addition to signing the petition, you may want to start looking for alternate locations.

N.B. The Place on W10th remains open, unaffected by this dispute.
