The tendency of the block on Orchard between Houston and Stanton to kill off restaurants faster than you can say "portobello 'foie gras'" has been nothing if not well documented. Which, somehow, hardly deters anyone, least of all those who just (four days ago) opened Big John's, in the former Kitchen & Cocktails space. Given the tables lined up unintentional cafeteria-style, a menu big on staples like roast chicken and mac and cheese, and a totally empty room as of 2:30 this afternoon, we're not pinning too high hopes on this one as official Orchard Street Savior. That said, as always, we'd love to be proven wrong.
