Second Avenue Deli Shuttered

The Times reports that the venerable and historic Second Avenue Deli has closed, perhaps for good. Owner Jack Lebewohl -- brother of the famously murdered Abe Lebewohl -- tells Flo Fab that a new building owner, Jonis Realty of Great Neck, has threatened to raise his rent from $24,000 to $33,000/month. This combined with the fact that significant renovations are believed to be required for the restaurant to pass its next health inspection has caused Lebewohl to close until these business issues are tied up.

This has CBGBs, Part II written all over it. Someday, we'll find a more efficient way to ensure these institutions remain open. Until then, commence the fund raising, protest, merchandise sales, etc.
