Five Points and Dok Suni get siblings with the arrivals of Cookshop and Eemo, respectively; Boyd makes a play on Sullivan; and Taïm provokes the question, Is falafel the new taco?
Here it is, the dish for August 22, 2005:
1) NY Mag reports that Cookshop has opened on Tenth Avenue. You may recall that we put this Five Points sibling on your radar a couple of weeks ago. (In fairness, Strong has been talking about this one for months.) Of all of the venues in this week's dish, this is the only one as yet garnering serious Food Set heat, so their tables may be in short supply through the month of September. [NYM] UPDATE: Calls to the restaurant indicate that the opening is not yet official. September might be your best bet on this one.
2) Eemo has opened on Lower First Avenue, just down the street from older brother Dok Suni. Jihye Choi and Judy Hwang's new and mostly Korean venue is sure to have the cheap eats set buzzing, as the average entree is $10. The playful caterpillar roll is pictured here. 3) Without a PR firm to do its bidding, the newish Boyd is using a delivery menu distribution as the first phase of launch. Luckily we're in the zone and got on board early, because there is something compelling about this sleek venue serving NY thai classics. West Villagers, add this one to the menu book immediately. Do note as well that the front of the restaurant opens up onto the street in agreeable weather.
4) Though it has been open for a mere month, vegetarian falafel and smoothie bar Taïm on Waverly already seems poised to achieve line-around-the-block status. First on it was Chowhound, then came The Daily News and now NY Mag has picked up on it. Falafel comes in three varieties -- green, roasted red pepper and harissa -- and they deliver. Good thing, as the place itself, in the space that was Curry Curry, is more or less a counter and standing room for a half-dozen people.
