Red Mango, Cue 63, and Possibly Mezzaluna AMG Call it a Day

Welcome to weekly Friday Shutter report. Know of any other restaurant that has served its last? Let us know.

2009_11_mezzaRIP1.jpg1) Hamptons: A tipster tells Curbed Hamptons that the months-old Mezzaluna in Ammagansett is donski: "Though the Upper East Side branch said yesterday that the East End outpost may just be closed for the season, sources close to the building's owner think the likelihood of a spring reopening is zero." [Curbed Hamptons]

2) Cobble Hill: Metromix learns that the Court St. location of sushi spot Cube 63 is no more. The Clinton Street location remains open. [Twitter]

3) Hell's Kitchen: Midtown Lunch reports that the Hell's Kitchen location of Red Mango (8th between 45th and 46th) has closed. This comes after the news that the one on Bleecker Street packed it in last week. Both had Pinkberrys nearby. [ML]

Thursday Opening Report

Black Shack, By the Ounce Certified Open; La Lucha Tomorrow

2009_11_openingreport1119.jpg1) East Village: Urban Daddy writes about La Lucha, the Mexican wrestling-inspired taqueria and T-shirt shop opening on 9th Street and Ave. A. Says UD: "Here, the ground rules of Mexico City are in effect—no guacamole, no sides of rice and beans, and a staunch anti-burrito position." Careful readers will recall that CB3 gave the restaurant's owner an unreasonably tough time when she came before them to present for a beer and wine license. Glad she finally made it. Status: Opening Friday; 147 Ave. A, 212-260-0235.

2) Tribeca: In her Off The Menu column, Flo Fab discusses the recently opened David Bouley project By The Ounce: "The elegant corner room at Bouley Bakery where people snack during the day becomes this wine bar from 6 p.m. to midnight. Wines are sold by the ounce, the half-glass and glass. Food by Shea Gallante, like charcuterie, cheeses and caviar, is also sold by the ounce." Status: Certified Open;120 West Broadway, 917-237-3207.

Leela Lounge, Choice Atlantic, Pit Stop All Doneski

P1010598.JPG1) Noho: The Eater inbox brings news this morning that Leela Lounge has shuttered and has been taken over by newcomers Dan Warren and Chef David Scott Walker. The word is that the pair will be opening a "common mans" gastropub in the space. [EaterWire]

2) Clinton Hill: Clinton Hill Blog reports that the eight-month-old coffee shop Choice Atlantic has closed. While it looked like it would just be closed temporarily a few months ago, it's clear the place is gone for good. It should be noted that Choice Market is alive and well. [ClintonHillBlog]

3) Cobble Hill: Lost City writes that Pit Stop, a French Bistro on Columbia Street, has shuttered. According to some signage on the window, the space will become "New Formulae, Bistro 4 Kids." [LostCity]

The Plywood Report

Mile's End, Rabbit in the Moon, Paulie Gee's, and More

1) Boerum Hill: No (sadly!), the photo above is not of a second branch of Soho glamfest Delicatessen. It's a new restaurant opening on Hoyt and Atlantic to be called Mile End. [PLYWOOD]

2) Greenwich Village: Above, also check out the recent progress at Rabbit in the Moon, the new bi-level gastropub with a VIP lounge (true) originally scheduled to open this month on 46 West 8th St. The owners of STK and Pink Elephant are the minds behind this space, so expect British food but a club element. Update: PR checks in to clarify some details. Though the construction workers said there would be a VIP room, PR says it will just be a 40 seat private dining room. Also, "there will be no clubby atmosphere—the owners are really moving away from this, Chris is the founder of STK and no longer the owner, the décor will be styled like an English Country Home, and the restaurant will only be open until 2 AM." Fun! [PLYWOOD]

Brunch Math Fail at Cafe Bueno

2009_10_receiptfail.jpg

The folks at Metromix explain the above receipt from their twitter feed came from a brunch this weekend at Cafe Bueno, the one month-old spot on the corner of Smith and Pacific. Perhaps those table position numbers (between the ordered items and the prices) got in the way of the final tally.

Wells Awards Two Stars to Brooklyn's Saul

2009_10_saulwells.jpg
[Krieger, 9/9/09]

Pete Wells bids adieu to the interim New York Times restaurant critic gig today, and before he handing over the keys, he bestows two stars on Smith Street veteran Saul:

...it has neither faded, nor stood still, nor sought a personality transplant. Instead Saul Bolton, the chef and the owner with his wife, Lisa, has upgraded just about everything in their modest storefront. Saul is the same restaurant, but better...

WellsWagering: Saul

2009_10_saulwells.jpg
[Krieger, 9/9/09]

For his final review as interim New York Times restaurant critic, Dining Section editor Pete Wells heads to Brooklyn's 10 year old Smith Street trailblazer of sorts Saul. Which means he is probably ending his streak of slamming bigger name restaurants by instead calling attention to an overlooked neighborhood gem. Or not. You never know with this one! The vote on what Wells will award Saul—which was last written up in the $25 and Under back in '99—is below. And now the big Sam Sifton debut is just one week away. Brace! [Saul, after 8PM; NYT]
