Rafael Thomas, a former bookkeeper at three Michelin star sushi palace Masa, was just indicted for pinching almost $100,000 from the restaurant while he was working there. In a press release about the trial, District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. notes: "This was a raw deal for a hot restaurant...This defendant is charged with cooking the books for more than a year at one of the top dining establishments in the country."
After a few months on the job, Thomas became the sole bookkeeper in charge of all payroll and cash sales deposits. The court documents allege that he skimmed from the cash sales (about $44,000 over six months), cashed corporate checks for himself (about $12,000), and tweaked his salary and vacation pay. Thomas was charged with one count of Grand Larceny in the Second Degree as well as 20 counts of Falsifying Business Records in the First Degree.
