In an interview with Paper today, restaurateur Ed Schoenfeld finally confirms that his Chinese hit Red Farm is moving into the laundromat space down below. There have been rumors of the expansion — both downstairs and uptown — for some time now. Schoenfeld says that he turns away 250 - 500 people on an average night (some nights it's as many as 800 people), so of course they could use the extra room.
But the move won't happen for a few months. Schoenfeld explains:
...I don't know if the people downstairs know...We've actually taken over the space legally. It's our space, but part of the deal is that we've rented it back to them for three months. So we take it over June 1st. It's going to take us a few months to do it over. So by September 1st, middle of August, we'll have that space.Oddly enough, he says that the downstairs area will be a "kitchen space and a bar," not a dining room. So perhaps they'll renovate the upstairs space to include more seats, or maybe there won't be more seats but they'll offer lunch and take-out.
