Il Matto, a somewhat unusual Tribeca restaurant that served cocktails over liquor-soaked rocks, featured above rolling tables, and offered modernist Italian fare, has closed. The owner Matteo Boglione tells Eater that the last day of service was Sunday night, noting that "I tried to keep the boat floating, but I didn't have the numbers to continue." The restaurant, which opened in June, hit the Deathwatch in August but earned two stars from Sam Sifton in September.
Boglione promises he will do something else in New York soon, and as for the space, it's on an upcoming community board agenda. Looks like the new owner wants to "change the method of operations to have later hours and a DJ Thursday, Friday, Saturday." Oh goody.
