Plans to open a German style beer hall at the former Water Taxi Beach space at the South Street Seaport have hit a snag because of, wait for it, restrictions proposed by the local Community Board. According to owner Telly Hatzigeorgiou, CB 1 wanted Pier Garden to close no later than 3 AM and cut the music at midnight during the week and 1 AM on the weekend to limit the impact on the community. They must have been referring to the visitors to the South Street Seaport Mall, ferry commuters, and fishermen because the last time anyone checked, no one lives in the area between the FDR and East River. The community claims they do want something there this summer, but Hatzigeorgiou isn't sure it's worth the trouble.
