PX This reports that Civetta, the tepidly received but beautiful downtown sister to Upper East Side favorite Sfoglia will close on December 1 to make way for a new project. Though they report the restaurant has abruptly laid off most of its staff, reservationists at neither restaurant will confirm—and honestly seem to have heard nothing about this. Nevertheless, the rumors remain tantalizing.
Details are scarce on what the bi-level space would become should Civetta close, but PX This' tipster is hearing it will be manned by the Rose Bar's Nur Khan and DJ partyface Paul Sevigny and may involve La Esquina's Serge Becker and the one and only Andre Balazs. Given that Sevigny has long said to be opening a restaurant in Soho, and rumors have been circulating for awhile now that Khan and Becker were working on a new project downtown, this A Team may be the real deal.
While the potential new project would be something for the nightlife world to look forward to, it's unfortunate that newest space from Colleen and Ron Suhanosky, the husband and wife team behind Sfoglia, couldn't find its sweet spot. More news as it develops.
