The Drying of NYC: East 5th Street Gets Ready to Rumble

2009_07_slasigns.jpg

It was clear the second Community Board 3 posted its agenda for this month's SLA Licensing Committee meeting that there would be a good show tonight. What with Mason Dixon facing complaints, Koi looking to take over a men's shelter, and Motorino hoping to sidle into the Una Pizza space, there's already built-in drama. But the residents of East 5th Street—always on hand to rile everyone up—have come together to ask neighbors to protest liquor licenses and sidewalk cafes altogether! It's time for the urinating, loud talking, vomiting, trash throwing and horn honking to stop, and speaking out against Thailand Cafe (bottom of right sign) is sure to do that.

What about Koi?

Though the NIMBYs on East 5th Street don't address what is sure to be a bigger noisemaker in the neighborhood, Koi's takeover of the men's shelter on Bowery and 3rd, EV Grieve attended a presentation given by the restaurant. The 6,000 square foot two floor restaurant/bar with over 231 seats will look a little something like this. But don't worry East Village. Word on the street it the patrons are "mature," "low key," and "mellow."
