Burger Shoppe, the three week old retro burger joint down near Wall Street was anticipated by some desperate FiDi folk as their own version of Shake Shack. Co-owned by a Pop Burger chef and decked out in formica counters and original diner floor, it had potential as a go-to neighborhood spot. Early reports hint it's no Shack, but it works as a worthy burger alternative to the other Wall St red meat joint, Zeitzeff. As usual, there is some good news and, then there is some bad news. We'll tell you the good first:
1) Good News: NYC Nosh goes to opening day, and while there was an issue with a soggy bun, overall the place is decidedly a good addition: "In spite of its opening-day jitters and occasionally hit-or-miss menu, Burger Shoppe remains a sound addition to the neighborhood. Excepting a strip of restaurants on nearby Stone Street, the area immediately surrounding Burger Shoppe is a desolate canyon of office towers, Subway sandwich shops and an occasional deli. Moreover, Burger Shoppe seems to understand the locals better than many lunch spots do–with deals like the Party Monster, an order of 100 burgers for $365 (one hour’s notice required)...at the end of the day it is difficult to beat the prices, and Burger Shoppe fulfills its promise of cheap fresh food, cooked to order." [NYC Nosh]
2) Pretty Good News: Blogger Feisty Foodie gets in early to try two burgers, onion rings, and a milkshake and decides it's pretty much ok: "We each placed our orders and received the burgers very quickly - so quickly that they must have been pre-made...My first burger was incredibly juicy, so juicy in fact that it ran down my hand, into my sleeve...I wouldn't have minded a juicy burger provided the juices stayed inside a bit more. It was extremely tasty though. My second burger, quite the opposite, was dry and the lack of or minimal application of sauce was very apparent...and I found the first to be so yummy I forgave them...My black & white milkshake was quite good." [Feisty Foodie]
3) Decent News: Savory Cities has four user reviews, and on average, they offer a mixed bag. This one is a fan of the onion rings: "The staff are very friendly and the wait time is not so bad. It appears they are still working out the kinks. I had the "Becky Burger", which had a nice smokey taste with aged cheddar, grilled onions, pickles, tomatoes and their sauce. It was very pleasant, but next time I will see if I can get it medium-well, because it was a little dry. I tried the half/half side of fries & onion rings. The fries were standard and a little over cooked. The ONION RINGS.....AAAAAHHHHHH, lovely." [Savory Cities]
4) Somewhat Decent News: Yelpers are also giving up a mixed bag. This review thinks it's pretty 'meh': "Meh, it was cheap, but they didn't put tomatoes on my burger like I'd asked them to...think they mass-produce the little guys and then add toppings later...Definitely not cooked to order, but fast and reasonably tasty. My burger was a little 'too' done for my tastes. It came with avocado, lettuce, and bacon...The place itself is kinda cool - has that retro soda-pop-shop feel to it." [Yelp]
5) Bad News: So far only one review in from the Chowhounders, and this foodie is no fan: "Just ate a take-out lunch. Mini-burger with bacon and cheese plus fries $12. Ouch. Burger was tasty but really dry. Killed and no juice at all. Fries were fresh cut but really salty. Like a salt lick. Even with it being the middle of lunch rush, I was pretty dissapointed."
