Avalon's Pedestrian Mall/Food Court Coming to the Bowery

Who wants a stinky alley when you can have what looks like the South Street Seaport?

The news that Avalon Bay, the group that brought us the two Avalon buildings on Bowery & Houston, was planning a pedestrian mall in an alley near 1st Street came out a few months ago. But recently, The Real Deal revealed a few of the more pertinent details about NYC's 'slice of the Left Bank', a.k.a. Extra Place. The alley/mall/final nail in the Bowery coffin will mostly cater to retailers but the developers already have plans for at least one restaurant:

"One of the spaces will be a café. 'The deal is not 100 percent final, so I cannot say who exactly, but it will be a smaller outpost of an existing New York City, Zagat-rated French café,' says Ewing. The 2,000-square-foot restaurant will serve breakfast, lunch and light dinner fare and feature 75 to 80 seats along with outdoor seating. The café should also be completed in late summer or early fall of 2008."
Any guesses? The other corner of Extra Place, the address that once housed CBGB's, will become a John Varvatos store, natch.
