3) Lower East Side: From a tipster, pre-plywood gossip on the possible future of the just-shuttered Orchard Bar: "word is orchard bar was for sale for the past year and was just bought by a group of irishmen who are converting the place into a irish pub." [PRE-PLYWOOD]
4) East Village: Glad tidings for fans of the old M&R Bar on Elizabeth Street in Nolita. The venue is reopening on the Bowery between Great Jones and East 4th in early June. Says a special Eater correspondent, "It sounds like the reincarnation will be in the space that housed the gay bar The Slide, but haven't been able to confirm as yet." The full press release from M&R, including the line "Many of the fun and quirky artifacts are coming out of storage including the art school nudes and the antique liquor and wine display bottles," after the jump. For Immediate Release: May 18, 2006M & R Bar-Dining Room is set to reappear the first week of June. M & R formally on Elizabeth Street, actually it was the first restaurant-bar there, will be reborn on the hot new Bowery. The original M & R lost its lease a couple of years ago and Michael Howett & Richard Bach, the owners, felt it was time to bring it back. Many of the fun and quirky artifacts are coming out of storage including the art school nudes and the antique liquor and wine display bottles.
After so many former patrons asked when M & R is coming back, Michael and Richard decided that they couldn’t resist any longer and would reopen it again in an interesting cellar space in Noho on June 7th. They also decided that they would not try to duplicate the old M & R, feeling the times are different and New York had changed. The new M & R will have a bit of a speak easy flavor that will be reached by descending down a flight of stairs from the street into a cellar. Wine, whiskey and a selection of small and main course dishes from an eclectic mix of cuisines will be the order of the day.
The room has a dark wood finish, plank tables and a bit of wrought iron. It will be a place where one can order from an extensive wine by the glass list and a wide selection of spirits while spying platters of cheese, salads and meats displayed on the bar. A cul de sac to discover small dishes of seafood, vegetables and meats along with nightly specials of larger dishes that will be served until late in the night. The place known for great music, a casually knowledgeable staff, wonderful food and a wide selection of wine and spirits returns to life in June.
M & R is the creation and re-creation of the owners of Marion’s Continental Restaurant & Lounge on the Bowery.
